In July 2011, the Ann Foundation launched an educational project in Sundarban, West Bengal. While the area is rich in natural resources, fisheries, honey production, and timber, there are no major industries to provide steady employment, nor a working transportation system. Consequently, attracting teachers to the area and maintaining the region’s schools presents a unique challenge. One way to meet that challenge was through online education. So the Ann Foundation took on this project, partnering with Samaj Unnayan Kendra, an NGO headed by Kallol Ghosh.

In the months that we worked with Samaj Unnayan Kendra, the Ann Foundation:

  • Acquired the necessary computer hardware for the local population to take part in this project.
  • With the help of 50 volunteer teachers, used video conferencing to supplement the education of 50 boys and girls in the area.
